Day 3Yewdale Fell Tue 4 Aug

Shorter courses will use National Trust Land at the edge of Tilberthwaite Quarries.

Parking

Will be in fields at Tilberthwaite Farm.
Access is via the A593, southbound from Ambleside signposted just after Yew Tree Farm, or northbound via Coniston village signposted just after Low Yewdale Farm.  Access is via a narrow lane heading up-to event parking restricting large amounts of two way traffic. 

ENTRANCE TO PARKING 8.30am-12.00 noon
EXIT FROM PARKING 12.30pm onward 

Assembly

Will be at Tilberthwaite Farm directly next to parking fields.

Public Transport

The nearest public transport is Ambleside or Coniston Village.

Campervans / Minibuses / Vans

Please note parking is accessed via a narrow gateway therefore we are unable to accommodate large vehicles or camper vans. 
Maximum size Campervan would be a VW Transporter.
Please park in Coniston village and carshare for those who we are unable to park at assembly. 
Please note cars will not be able to vacate parking till 12.30pm.

Starts & Finishes

RED (High) Start, for courses 1-17

Will be 1.6k with 130m climb from the main arena & parking via public road then paths onto Yewdale Fell, steep and rocky in areas. 
Take care as part of this is via the lane where event traffic is arriving. Follow signs and marshals instructions. 
Allow up-to 50 minutes. 
This is well away from the Red Finish so there will not be a clothing dump.
There is a 70m taped route from map collection to the start kite. Follow the red & blue streamers.

RED (High) Finish

1.5km & 150m descent back to Assembly. 

WHITE start for course 18 & 19

The start and finish for courses 18 (yellow) & 19 (white) are co-located at High Tilberthwaite, 600m level walk from assembly. 
Both courses have sections of taped route following hi-vis streamers. These follow routes that have been cleared of bracken, up steep slopes.
Competitors on course 18 will need to follow walls, fences and streams. 
The course is adventurous, using enclosed areas of open fellside. Don’t get distracted by the super views!

No dogs at the finish areas please. 

The sheep will be on the high fells so the farmer has given us permission to leave the gates open for the event.

Planners comments

RED start (courses 1-17)

Most of the courses are on the Yewdale Fells. The area is mostly rough open pathless fellside, 300-450m above sea level, on the south-eastern shoulder of Wetherlam.
There is an abundance of intricate contour detail, with numerous crags, boulders and marshes. Try to avoid being distracted by the magnificent views of the Lake District hills.

Bracken

Bracken growth has been particularly vigorous this year. The courses have been planned to avoid the worst of it.
The most extensive areas of bracken are mapped with the green striped undergrowth symbol. Expect this to be slow going when planning route choices, particularly for the early parts of courses 1-5 on the lower slopes
Smaller areas for bracken may be encountered anywhere in the area. Particularly on south facing slopes or sheltered re-entrants.  
One leg of course 17 (orange) follows the line of a fence up a bracken infested slope. We have trampled a clear route up the hill side.

Fence

A barbed wire topped fence runs through the area. This is highlighted on the map with a solid purple line. The fence may only be crossed at gates or stiles, indicated on the map using the purple crossing point symbol.

Marshes

Following the hot dry weather, most of the marshes are dry and runnable, but may be wetter if we rave significant rainfall before the event.

Courses 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,10 & 15 are at a scale of 1:10000 and 5m contours.

Courses 7,9 & 11-14 and 16-19 are at a scale of 1:7500 and 5m contours.
